It was a hot summer day, and I was scrolling through twitter instead of working when I discovered the stories of Suze Snow. I had been feeling distracted and moody that day, and I knew that trying to force myself to work would possibly bring about a case of frustration that would only make me feel worse about my wayward muse and my creativity. As much as I wanted to “show up” and “do the work” that I know it takes to be successful in my line of creative insanity that I like to call writing, and “my calling”, it seemed to be impossible that day. So when I found something new and juicy to read I jumped at the opportunity. All the better, I realized that it was a short story. 20 or so pages. Something I could read through in half an hour.
I started with Returning the Favor, because…well, let’s be honest, there are very few people, man or woman, I think who wouldn’t find the premise of some lady love after a steamy massage at least somewhat beautiful and enticing. I was expecting smut. Bad smut. Like…horrible porn smut. And I was wrong. And I was so incredibly happy about that. What I found was that her stories had layers. Even in the small amount of space and time. They were concentrated, tender, sweet, and yes, very hot. I was amazed with the amount that Suze Snow was able to accomplish in such a short story. I found myself going through four more of her stories in just that one day, wondering if the first story I read was a fluke. And NO! This was her whole style. There was sex, hot sex, but there was also romance. Rarely was there a coupling between two people who just never wanted to see each other ever again and existed solely within a vacuum. You got a hint of their lives, and I found myself really wanting to know more about all of her diverse characters.
I felt like I really kind of understood Stephen King when he said “ A short story is like a kiss in the dark from a stranger”. Her stories were intriguing, and they inspired my own creative muse to get working and bring my particular brand and style of writing to the world. And then I spoke to her. What an amazing person she is! She’s kind, considerate, always willing to lend some friendly author advice, or a tip from something she’s conquered in the self-publishing realm. Really, on my rough days, I usually shoot her a message and she gets back almost immediately with some encouragement and an up-beat word that tends to go so much farther than I could ever communicate. It’s amazing how you can grow a support group and a community even on the internet, but it has been essential to my writing, and the support and help of this wonderful writer has been such a pleasant and much needed surprise.
She’s pretty much a steam roller when it comes to her writing. Often releasing a new story every week ( I am so jealous of her discipline), she seems to work tirelessly on her craft. And she’s good at what she does. So take a moment and check her writing out. Even better, check out her writing AND shoot her a message. She’s a great person to talk to, even about the process of both writing and reading. Who knew that a band of erotica writers would be able to support each other so much?
